Abstract: Studies show that metformin inhibits the proliferation of several types of cancer cells. All evidences, therefore propose the antitumor effect of metformin. Metformin can repress the oxygen consumption of tumor cells, and suppress hypoxiainducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) accumulation through the translational and posttranslational mechanisms, and suppress the expression of HIF-1α by activating AMPactivated protein kinase (AMPK).
