Cancer Section, Foreign Medical Sciences Reference Material was first issued in 1974. It was edited by Ritan Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and published by People’s Medical Publishing House.
The name of the journal was changed to Cancer Section, Foreign Medical Sciences in 1979, being edited by Beijing Institute for Cancer Research.
The journal turned to be edited by Information Research Institute of Shandong Academy of Sciences and sponsored by Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences in 1983. Paper size: 185 mm×260 mm, 64 pages.

The journal turned to be jointly sponsored by Chinese Medical Association and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences in 2003.
It became a monthly journal in 2004.
The name of the journal was changed to Journal of International Oncology in 2006.
The journal was put under the management of the Chinese Medical Association Magazine House and it became one of the Journal of Chinese Medical Association in 2006.
It came into the core journals of statistics source in 2008.
The online submission and review system was launched in 2010.
